Description
This is a sculpture of St Benedict by Orfeo Boselli, sculpted in the Renaissance. Orfeo Boselli (1597–1667) was an Italian sculptor working in Rome. As with most Roman sculptors of the sixteenth through to eighteenth centuries, a great part of his commissioned work was in restoring and completing fragmentary ancient Roman sculptures.
Casts such as this are typically copied in charcoal by many of the ‘sight-size’ art students based in Florence and London in preparation for portrait painting.
This piece comes fitted with a wall hanging. It can be cast in many other materials if desired so please don’t hesitate to ask any questions .
A little about the Renaissance art:
Renaissance art, painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and literature produced during the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries in Europe under the influences of an increased awareness of nature, a revival of classical learning, and a more individualistic view of man.
During the High Renaissance in Italy, sculpture became much less dominated by architecture and painting. For example, architecture became more sculpture-like (pilasters were replaced by columns) while in painting, modelling and perspective superseded outline and composition. Taste in sculpture also changed.
The founder of Renaissance sculpture was Ghiberti, whose masterpiece is the Gates of Paradise, a pair of bronze doors for the Florence Baptistry. Renaissance sculpture is often thought to have begun with the famous competition for the doors of the Florence baptistry in 1403, which was won by Lorenzo Ghiberti. He sculpted a pair of bronze doors for the Florence Baptistry . The period was marked by a great increase in patronage of sculpture by the state for public art and by wealthy patrons for their homes.
